Day one of MoM hearing produces more questions than answers

Presenting on behalf of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS; Rosemont, Illinois) Paul Manner, MD, University of Washington (Seattle), who informed the panel, “the fundamental problem for a clinician is that there is no best biomaterial for a total joint or even one component." He said the choices facing device makers "represent a compromise between the ideals of design and the realities of materials.” He said any design changes are likely to require a change of materials, which he said in turn “will make a big and often unpredictable difference in prosthesis function and survival.” He also said “a bearing that lasts a lifetime and allows unlimited activity may be unattainable" (FDA advisory committee).
